Buku ini disusun guna mempermudah mahasiswa dan praktisi khususnya di bidang Kesehatan dalam mengolah data statistik dan menginterpretasikan hasil output yang didapatkan. Pada bagian uji Hipotesa, modul ini memberikan informasi sekitar beberapa uji hipotesa dalam penelitian analitik dan cara mengintreptasikan data output SPSSnya. Pada setiap bab, penulis memberikan contoh dari beberapa penelitan penulis dan peneliti lainnya dari beberapa referensi sehingga dapat meningkatkan pemahaman pembaca dan dapat dipelajari secara berkesinambungan.

Proses aplikasi SPSS dibuku ini menggunakan SPSS versi 17. Walaupun, ada sedikit perbedaan beberapa menu data editor pada SPSS dengan beberapa versi, penulis berharap pembaca bisa menelaah menu data editor yang dimaksud dalam buku ini pada program komputer program SPSS versi lainnya yang terkadang terletak di sub menu yang berbeda.

Sebagai penulis junior, penulis menyadari masih banyak keterbatasan dalam buku ini. Saran dan kritik yang membangun sangat dibutuhkan guna meningkatkan kualitas modul ini, feel free to send me an email, najem240783@yahoo.com

Today, is our historical days to make our future plan, together

Initially, we were discussion mates
We met on November 2008
Then, we usually had a discussion about anything, religion, politics, education and personal consultation, particularly when I was far away from my family, in Melbourne for two years
He was very patient to take care me with his invaluable advice
Then, Allah arranged our life to meet again on 2010

We separated for two years in two different continents, Asia and Australia
We separated for one years and a half in two different provinces, South Sumatera and Jambi
Then we met to make a history for our life, our family met on 26 of March 2011 to determine about our marriage

Alhamdulillah, after a long journey, our own journey, then Allah gives us chance to make a journey and next journey together, Insya Allah, to pursue Ridho Allah swt and to make endless history...

The First Experience as a Speaker in Global Fund Socialisation in some regions in South Sumatra, 2010

Health office in South Sumatra needed assistance to deliver a knowledge about Harm Reduction and Voluntary Counseling and Testing on 19-23 March 2010. They already had a such team to deliver a package of knowledge about HIV/AIDS treatment. I went to some regions, including Lubuk Linggau, Prabumulih, OKI and Palembang. Most audiences are nurses, midwives, doctors and other hospital staffs. Such a great experience to deal with audiences who have more experiences than me......

Friendship Ever and Forever

What I want to say that I love you very much, for your kindness to help me to go through all my subjects in Epidemiology and Biostatistics and other consortium subjects in our study. Thank you for your sincere and kind help……Learning difficult subjects with English is not such easy job….I am thinking, if I learn with my language, it would be difficult too to understand subjects, how come I learn with English????

But…u know that I have friends who kindly help me, to teach me sincerely, although they should teach me more than one times, repeat again until I a bit understood about each lessons.

Well, we are not surprise that Halal food is easy to be found in Melbourne. Melbourne in multicultural city, so you can find many foods from middle east, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and many other countries. The important thing that they provide Halal food…..

So, You can eat ice cream, chocholate, sweets, Indonesian food and many other foods in Melbourne……My friend always ask us, “We always try to find Halal food if I go around with all of you..btw do you have Halal Boy friends in Islam? “ lol…..” Yeah, we have halal boyfriend, after you marry him….. J…Halal Husband, but u can’t eat him…:b…….

The meat that is halal to Muslims is described by Allah in the Qur'an:

"Forbidden to you (for food) are: dead meat, blood, the flesh of swine, and that on which hath been invoked the name of other than Allah; that which hath been killed by strangling, or by a violent blow, or by a headlong fall, or by being gored to death; that which hath been (partly) eaten by a wild animal; unless ye are able to slaughter it (in due form); that which is sacrificed on stone (altars); (forbidden) also is the division (of meat) by raffling with arrows: that is impiety..." People being given A New Opportunity to Vote and Their Reaction to that in Presidential Election

At 6 pm, a lot of people queued in front of Indonesian Consulate, 72 Queens street, Melbourne 3004. People who do not that 8 of July is a crucial day for Indonesian Presidential elections for the next 5 years-period president would be confused about this condition. Indonesian people who are Australian permanents residents, Indonesian students, Indonesian visitors were enthusiasm to come for this election in Melbourne. The place presidential of election is in Indonesian Consulate from 9.30 am to 20 pm in Melbourne.

A new Indonesian Constitutional Court’s (MK) decision eases people who are not listed as permanent electors in one area to use their voice only by showing their identity cards or passport, at least one hour before the election is finished. Burharudin Bahar, a Consul General of The Republic of Indonesia in Melbourne said “the new decision by Indonesian Constitutional Court can increase the number of voters particularly for visitors in Melbourne or unlisted people as voters in Melbourne”, in relax discussion with him in the same day of the election. Hendra Darmawan, a visitor from Yogyakarta for short course in Latrobe University and Islamic Centre Victoria, said “the decision is a breakthrough for Indonesian and ease me to vote in Melbourne.”

Indonesian Constitutional Court’s (MK, Mahkamah Konstitusi red. Indonesian language) decision about the presidential election is still controversial. Giri Taufik, an Indonesian student in Master of Law in Melboune University student, said “What MK did in its decision has undermined the separation of power between the judiciary and the executive or legislature.” "On the contrary, it will only weaken democracy and people’s rights. This kind of court will only concentrate power in its hand. Therefore, “it is likely what will happen is that it creates Oligarchy, not strengthening democracy,” he added. On the other hand, Ibrahim Assegaf, an Indonesian student in Master of Law in Melbourne University student, said “MK decision in practical areas can reduce protests from other candidate of President regarding the less organized list of permanent voters (DPT). He added “, Head of MK clearly stated in an interview in TEMPO magazine that the protest is a motivation of decision regarding identity card and family card in replacing DPT. “Without this decision, many riots and problems could occur because many people are not listed in DPT who force to use their right,” Mr. Ibrahim added. Mohamad Fahmi, the general leader of Indonesian Student Association of Australia (PPIA) added “the number of voters increased about 20 % compared to legislative voters previously in Melbourne, Australia.” As a result, this new MK decision will benefit to reach more voters in Indonesia and overseas.

From three candidates of presidents-vice president in Indonesia; Megawati-Prabowo, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono-Boedione, and Jusuf Kalla-Wiranto, The temporary result till 20 of July, 2009 in Melbourne indicated that is SBY-Budi with 2648 (85 %), JK-Win with 261 (8 %) and Mega-Pro with 206 (7 %) (http://waslumelbourne.org/). Comparing to Indonesia, SBY-Budi also lead the result of this election with 61.66 %, followed by Mega-Pro with 28.57 % and then JK-Win with 9.77 % (KPU results, 20 of July 2009). The results is not very much different in Melbourne and Indonesia.

Based on the data from election investigators (Panwaslu Melbourne), only 20 % people (3115 out of 14983) in the permanent list of voters (DPT) use their right in this election. Mohamad Fahmi, the general leader of Indonesian Student Association of Australia (PPIA) suggested that there are two possible reasons for this condition. “Firstly, less awareness of Indonesian in Melbourne used their right in this election. Secondly, it could be due to overestimated list of voters in Melbourne.” He added “data of eligible voters in Melbourne has not been updated by the Indonesian Consulate in Melbourne.” Students who finished their study in Melbourne are not compulsory to report to the Consulate except students who are the government workers. Moreover, the number of private students in Melbourne is huge. Therefore, “the Consulate should actively and seriously to update the new data in the Consulate,” he said. He also added “Dikti (The Higher education department) and Deplu (The Foreign Affair Department) should work together to create a regulation regarding compulsory report for students who have finished their study in overseas. “Online register will also help the proposed regulation”, he suggested. As a result, “the fund for election in Melbourne could be minimized,” he added.

Hopefully, the future of Indonesia will be brighter under SBY-Budi leadership to reduce poverty and increase other sectors in Indonesia. Moreover, we hope that they also could fulfill their promise in their last campaign.

This Ramadhan is my last Ramadhan in Melbourne, Australia. I am not sure whether Allah swt will give more chances to continue my study here or any countries.

There are a lot of iftar here, by Pengajian PbBrunswick, YIMSA (Young Indonesia Muslim Association), Consulate General of Indonesia and IMCV (Indonesia Muslim Community of Victoria)....and Young Muslim Leadership program.......

We also pray tarawih togerther here. We pray in Pelham musholla in Melbourne University. Subhanallah, all leader of Tarawih prayer read Al-Qur;an very well......Other mosques also run the same progam. there are more thatn 30 mosques around Melbourne, Subhanallah......

DIARY OF LEADERSHIP COURSE FOR YOUTH MUSLIM

The leadership course start on last 6 of June.........I met 15 Youth Muslim in Victoria. Mostly, they are permanent resident or citizens in Australia, except me as international student. It is a great chance to learn more with them and lecturers in this course 6 Of June 2009 In freezing day, 6 C, I had to go to leadership course in early morning. Fortunately, the place was in Melbourne Uni, close to my house. There were some sessions on Saturday class;

What I understood from this session, are

Diversity in Islam is a mercy as far as it is within boundaries. Sis Rachel explained that different scholar give differett weights to different techniques. Scholar differ between schools and within schools, she added.
To overcome the misconception in Islam, some steps that we can do when we discuss with non-muslim; Listening, Dialogue and Prescribe. Source of misconception could be from pseudo scholars, distortion and falsehood, internet, media, history etc.
Imam Ghazali divided religious science into six categories ; 1. Al-kalam (Theology), 2. Furu' (Fiqh), 3. Usul Al-Fiqh . 4. Al-Hadith, 5. Ilm Bathin and 6. Ilm Tafsir
Effective Da'wah circle ; Identify-- Acknowledge--Assess--Respond--Identify--...so on

Swine Flu alert In Melbourne, Victoria.

Today, 20 May 2009, I listened the Ten news about Swine Flu in Melbourne. Based on their information, TWO primary school classes are in quarantine after three Melbourne brothers tested positive for swine flu. they consist of three boys, aged 9, 10 and 12 tested positive to the H1N1 virus, a week after the students returned from a family holiday in Los Angeles.
Health authorities immediately undertook some early prevention to halt the spead of the virus. They quarantine the victims, their classmates and their family at Clifton Hill Primary school in Melbourne's inner north. All are being treated with anti-viral drugs Tamiflu and Relenza.

We, as international students, are also worried with this disease. What we can do now is doing some prevention such as Flu vaccine, close mouth and nose when other people sneeze and cough and maintain our health condition.

Update 30 of May 2009 : confirmed cases of swine flu already reached 200 cases....

Election of Parliaments members from Jakarta

On 9 April 2009, we went to Indonesian Embassy to elect one of parliament members from Jakarta. There were a lot of TPS here. My TPS was number 15. I ticked (CONTRENG) one of the candidates .............ssst (it is a secret)..... Apart from election, Some stand sold a diverse of Indonesian food such as Sate Padang, Empek2, Ketoprak and etc.....I bought Sate Padang, Empek2, Chicken Pie, Ondel22....... :)

Every morning, I eat bread and drink a glass of hot milk. I sometimes eat a plate of cereal. Moreover, I should take my Vitamin D capsule due to my vitamin D deficiency. This vitamin will help to absorb calcium from my foods and milk. Doctors suggested me to go out every morning to expose with Sunlight....however I am lazy due to cool weather.

Strolling to Bendigo, Victoria

Bendigo is the second largest gold mine in the past in Victoria. We went there by train . We spend two ours by train on strolling Bendigo in 1st of January 2009. We got free ticket for the first fare.

There are also a lot of old and historical building. We also got on Talking tram to go around Bendigo and visited the Tram museum. It is nice to travel with other Indonesian friends and family in new year day.

Class will start this week

Holiday ends now...I don't realize it, thankfully, I used my holiday to do 2 summer subject : Harm reduction for Injected drug users, and Principles of Qualitative Research. As a result, I am not very suprised to start my first semester now.....

This year, I only take 2 elective subjects, 2 consortium subjects and my minor thesis. Finally, I have finished my core and suggested subjects in the first year. However, I miss discussion with my smart friends. Only I and Leo (Mymmar) will have classes this year. Two of us, Farhana (Bangladesh) has go home for good and Shahid (pakistan) will be busy with his thesis..........Anyway, fortunately I still have other friends who are smart and very helpful..

On 21 of February, there was a sport competition among Indomelb and Indomonash........Other people were busy with the competition, while other girls were busy wit selling Indonesian food. There were Ba'so, Empek2, Tahu Isi, Cheese cake, Martabak Mesir, Somay, Martabak Manis, Martabak kentang, es teler and es doger. All the price is $ 5 each portion on average.

I sold Empek2...... : )....one unforgetable experience is frying empek22. I was not careful so there is a bruise in my skin due to hot oil......however, my food was sold out. I am happy

Victorian Bush fires

A catastrophe occured in Victoria. There was an extreme weather in Victoria for a few days. The temperature reached 46 C with heatwave. The news update report the bush fires lead to more than 200 casualties, at least 750 homes that have been destroyed, an estimated 330,000 hectares that burnt out.

Real Summer in Melbourne

Yesterday, the temperature in Melborne reached 37 degree. it was scorcher day.
I was in air conditioned library. When I finished my task, I went home in the evening with that temperature. I felt like heat wave. When I arrived home, my face skin is very warm.........hot. Then, I took a bath....however, my face was still warm..... then I used moisture and toner for my face....

Today, the temperature will reach 39 degree celcius. I decide not to go out again.

Yesterday, I, Sema and Aunty joined Tajwid Class in Springvale, a suburb in Melbourne. It took 45 minutes by car. The Imam Abu Bakar taught us. The Iman memorizes the content of the Al-Qur'an. The Iman also closed his eyes when he taught us and had different space with us because all students are females.

It is nice to read Al-Qur'an and the Iman listen and correct our readings. Imam's first language is Arabic, as a result, he correct a lot of my readings...

I will come again every week to practice my Tajwid....

Thanks Sema to ask me to join that class and I can make a lot of female Muslim friends from different countris (Afgan, Malay, Singap, Oz, Iraq....etc)

Approximately 3000 people gathered in front of State Library, Melbourne, Victoria.
People from different cultures, religions and organisations supports to stop the Massacre in Palestine and Israel Out for Palestine land.

After some oration, the mass marched from State library to Federation Square. The mass yelled "Free free free Palestine, Israel Out"

The demonstration was peacefully.....the transportation was stopped

Rihlah (a journey) with PpBrunswick, 27 December 2008 in Kampung Ayu, Ceres

To celebrate New Islamic Year, 1430 Hijriah, PpBrunswick held a Rihlan for Muslim society in Melbourne. The committee prepared some competitions for children with all ages (0 - 15 years old). The activities were the adventure, colouring, knowing Hijaiyah letters, photo competition & moving balls.

After the competitions were finished, then we had a lunch together. Subsequently, we prayed Zuhur together and then announced the winners for each competition.

Celebrating Ied in Melbourne is unforgettable experience. All muslims in Melbourne city gathered to pray in Sport hall in Melbourne University. There were approximately 800 persons participated in this celebration. All committees were busy to welcome guests, prepare the food and drinks that were bought by Indonesians etc. After praying, then we enjoyed our lovely Indonesian foods such as Rendang, Opor, Ketupat (rice), Liver chillies (?), snacks etc.

After finishing the ceremony, we travelled to the beach and a old castle in Melbourne. All are fabulous. However....I miss my family so much.....

We went to Lake mountain with our friends, Mayada et al. It was very cold. Moreover, I could see, feel and touch snow shower, Subhanallah.

Today (18 April 2008), we danced in Latrobe University because there was a declaration of KILAT organization in order to gather Indonesian students and lecturers and Australian students who are interested in learning Bahasa. We added a new style in the dance so we intensified our practice a week. However, we are still difficult to control our breath because we have to dance and sing in one time. We were very tired. However, we are happy to perform and introduce Acehnese dance in Australia.

Case definition : an acute, highly communicable viral disease with prodomal fever, conjunctivitis, coryza, cough and small spots with white or blusih white centers on an erythematous base on the buccal mucosa (Koplik spots)

Infectiouse agent : Measles virus, a member of the genus Morbilivirus of the family Paramyxoviridae

Reservoir : Only humans

Mode of transmission : Airborne disease that spread by droplet, direct contact with nasal or throat secretions of infected person. In rare cases, it is spread by articles freshly soiled with nose and throat secretions.

Incubation Period : About 10 days; 7-18 days from exposure to onset of fever, generally 14 days until rash appears.

Period of Communicability : the first day till 4 days before rash onset and 4 days after appearance of the rash.

Susceptibility and resistance : Acquired immunity after illness is enduring. Baby who acquire immunity from mother who have had this disease is protected from measles for 6-9 months. However baby who acquires the immunity from mother with vaccine induced immunity have to be vaccinated in earlier age. First immunization at 12-15 months would protect children in 94-98 % and reimmunisation lead to 99 % immunity.

It is located between Apollo Bay and Port Campbell in The Port Campbell National Park. Original name of The Twelve Apostles is 'The Sow and Piglets'. Then, the name was changed in the 1950s to engage and attract a lot of visitors. The twelve apostles means twelve Jesus Followers. These famous residence of The Great Ocean Road were created from the 70 meter limestone cliffs by the relentless pounding of the Southern Ocean. I took picture in front of the F1 car (Ferrari) that driven by Kimi Raikkonen last year.
On 16 March 2008, F1 was held in Melbourne, Australia. Many people watched it directly. However, it was very hot on that day. The temperature raised 40 C............................................In addition, the number of laps, circuit length and race distance were 58, 5.303 km and 307 574 km respectively. The winner was Lewis Hamilton. My friend told me her experience that in that place was very noisy although we have used Ear plug and she should queue to buy cold water.

Exercises for Attaining Taqwa

There are some exercises to achieve Taqwa in order to attain Allah's Ridho in this life and next.

Firstly, Guarding the tongue

According to Qadi Abu Bakr, " Guard your tongue and protect it from lying and realize that it expresses your inward state. It expresses for you, your knowledge and your practice."

As Muslims, we have to cope four source of lies that consist of 'lying, backbiting, argumentation and engaging in what does not concern you.

Secondly, Guarding the Eyes

In Qur'an, Allah states "Tell the believing men to lower their gaze.....and tell the believing women to lower their gaze."

Thirdly, Guarding the Ears

Allah says, "Surely the hearing, the sight and the heart, all of those man is responsible for (QS 17:36). In addition, Allah adds that when they hear empty talk they turn away from it". According to Imam Subki, "the one listening is one of the backbiters.

Fourthly, Guarding the Stomach

Ibid explains that flesh that has been nourished with the prohibited is more worthy of the fire. Allah says "O You who believe, eat and drink but not to excess. Surely Allah loves not the excessive." Moreover, fasting is one prescription to achieve taqwa (Qur'an 2:183)

The hadit Fifthly, Guarding the Private Parts

Allah says, " And those who protect their private parts except with their spouses.......(Qur'an 23: 5-7). Allah adds that not to do even draw near to fornication or perversion for it is a foul thing and leads to bad path.

Moreover, tight clothing for both women and men should be avoided. Remember that sexual appetite is one Shaytan's greatest weapon.

Sixthly, Guarding the Hands

Al-Bukhar state " The Muslim is one who other Muslim are safe from his tongue and his hands. " Our hands will be one of witnesses in the hereafter. Moreover, we should never raise to any Muslim unless it is in self-defense.

Lastly, Guarding the feet

'O Allah, I seek refuge in You that I should go astray or lead others astray; that I should trip or trip others; that I should oppress or be oppresses or that I should show ignorance or be the brunt of ignorance.'

One key is we should avoid places that will bring suspicion from others down on.

"O Allah, forgive us for our sins, intentionally or unintentionally..........."
What can we do now is that never despair when we lapse and show weakness.
We should struggle with full effort to be better man in the present and in the future.

AUSAID Welcoming Party
On 14 MArch 2007, Ausaid held Welcoming Party for Ausaid scholarship recepients. Ausaid Committee barbecued a lot of lamb, beef, prawn, and chickens. Although the weather raised 40 C, many people attended this party from more than 30 countries. Lucia, Ausaid Manager and Jacqui, APS manager, came and mingle with other internatioanl students.

We also listened some songs from a diverse countries and a dance from Indonesia. I am happy because I met my friends again and our seniors.
Thank you Ausaid The Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID) as an autonomous organisation within the Commonwealth Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade that give us chances to pursue our education in Australia.

Which diseases should be eradicated after Polio and Measles???????

The next disease that has to be eradicated is Avian Influenza which can be transmitted to humans. For more than three decades, no cases of Avian Influenza were found in humans. But then, in 2005, cases in China triggered an outbreak of Avian Influenza in poultry and humans. There are some important reasons to eradicate this disease. The first reason is the Case Fatality Rate (CFR) of Avian Influenza in poultry and humans is very high. The CFR in poultry and humans is 100% and more than 50% respectively. The spread of the Avian Influenza virus could devastate the income of livestock farmers. Furthermore, the transmission of the virus from birds to humans can threaten the human lives worldwide. The second reason is the consequences if Avian Influenza mutates into influenza affecting humans and other mammals would be severe. Although this condition has rarely occurred, there is a small possibility of a mutation that could trigger an influenza pandemic where the new virus can be transmitted easily among humans. Finally, the vaccination to prevent this disease in humans is still being researched. It is better to stop the transmission from birds to humans, so we can prevent the worse catastrophe.

Pulmonary TB in Indonesia

Pulmonary Tuberculosis is a contagious infection in lungs and can spread to other organs. It is caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis and spread through air droplets from a cough or sneeze of infected persons. The risk group of this disease is elderly, infants and persons with weakened immune systems. Factors that devastate the spread of the bacteria is frequent contact with infected persons, living in crowded or slum area and having poor nutrition. Furthermore, the increase of HIV infections, number of homeless individuals and patients with drug-resistant strains of TB exacerbates the infected persons (Medical Encyclopedia, 2008).

Symptoms of the infected persons are minor cough and mild fever, fatigue, unintentioanl weight loss, coughing up blood, fever and night sweet and phlegm-producing cough, wheezing, excessive sweating, chest pain and breathing difficulty (Medical Encyclopedia, 2008).

According WHO report, in 2005, India, China and Indonesia had the highest number of new positive cases, 506852, 472719 and 158640 cases respectively. Moreover, the prevalence rate of Pulmonary TB in Indonesia decreased slightly from 2002 to 2005, approximately 122, 115 and 107 per 100000 populations respectively. However, the incidence rate was 72 per 100000 and the case fatality rate was high, around 25 per 100 in 2005 (Indonesia Health Departement, 2005).

To sum up, tuberculosis is curable disease if the patients take medicine regularly (almost 95 %). In contrast, some patients who are reluctant to take pills regularly would lead to resistant of some pills and prolong their treatment.

WHO and the International Union Againts Tuberculosis and Lung Disease (IUATLD) introduce DOTS (Directly Observed Treatment Short Course)worldwide to overcome Pulmonary TB. In addition, , the golden triangle in insuring TB patients’ adherence wasdirect daily observation, health education and the long-term follow-up (Hsieh et. al, 2005)

SARS

The first cases of SARS emerged in mid-November 2002 in Guangdong Province, China. WHO reported 8,098 people worldwide suffer from acute respiratory syndrome with pneumonia or respiratory distress syndrome (probable cases) and 774 died from the total from November 2002 to July 2003. By late July 2003, WHO does not find a case again and the worlds are safe from the global outbreak. Unfortunately, some new cases of possible SARS were reported by the Chinese Ministry of Health in 2004.

What is SARS????

SARS or Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome is a viral respiratory illness that is caused by a previously unrecognized coronavirus (SARS-associated coronavirus/SARS-CoV). The spread of the virus is by close contact-person-to-person with respiratory secretions or body fluid of the infected person, such as people sneezing (their droplet), an infected person touches and through the air. The incubation period is typically 2 to 7 days or even 10 days. In small population, it is up to 14 days.

The Symptoms

The initial symptoms of this illness is a high fever (>38.0 C). People will have headache, general feeling of discomfort and body aches. Other symptoms are mild respiratory, diarrhoea. After 2 to 7 days, other symptoms appear such as a dry, non productive cough, and subsequently hypoxia. Most patients develop pneumonia. The infected patients will be tested to determine the treatment. The patient will take various antiviral medicines to prevent the severe effects of SARS.

I start to struggle with my subjects. Fortunately, I can understand lecturers' explanation. However, when the class discussion starts, I still face some obstacles. For instance, I cannot understand western people speaking because they speak fast. Another obstacle is reading. I read some cases in group discussion slowly because I should obtain the main information in those articles. Unfortunately, other students can read them quickly and I miss some information and cannot give my opinion. I hope I can cope my obstacles regarding languages as soon as possible. Australian Cultural Values

As Indonesian, I felt shock when I stayed here for the first month. We can see a lot of public display of affection everywhere, and people speak fast, etc. After a month, I get used to understand western people speaking.

There are some Australian Values that we should understand.
Firstly, Equality.
Can you call your teacher or your parents or even people who are older than you by their first name in Indonesia? It's rude in Indonesia. If we compare with Australia cultural values, they try to treat people equally. We can call our teacher without 'Sir' or "Mrs' in front of their name, Generally, we call them by their first name.

Secondly, Independence
People in Australia are individual. They can make their decision and take responsibility for their life. Generally, after they are adult, they tend to live alone, without burdening their family.

Thirdly, Balance.
People try to balance their work and their life. For instance, a lot of shops are closed earlier in Australia in Melbourne because their should enjoy their time for other privacy activities.

Fourthly, Privacy
Don't try to ask privacy questions with Australian such as their income, status, age and other personal characteristics. Those are Taboo questions in Australia.

In addition, to we should understand the Australian communication style;
Firstly, Eye contact (around 70 %, do not stare at then all time), Secondly, Personal space (Approximately one metre apart), Thirdly, physical contact (especially for people who have close relationships), fourthly, turn-taking (Western people feel uncomfortable with silence), fifthly, being polite and effective (using 'please', could you possibly lend......?, 'Thank you).

Frankston Beach,

Last week we visit this beach. It is a nice beach in Victoria. To visit it, we should get on train and stop in the Frankston. There is a sand palace till April 2008. We can sightsee a stunning scenery here. We can see a lot of sculptures that was made of sand in Frankston. They are very gorgeous. Then, we can stroll along the beach. However, when we came here, the temperature was around 40 C. We could get burned without UV lotion.

Finally, I was very happy to stroll in this beach and went shopping there.

Suicide...........??????

Suicide, I think you have heard this word and know this term. People think by committing suicide is one relief to escape from a difficult situation that is impossible to be overcame. Some condition that trigger people committing suicide is feeling guilty, being angry, being ashamed, broken hearth, victims of sex or child abuse, and unintended pregnancy.

In 2007, too many people of all ages end their life by committing suicide. On average, almost 3000 people commit suicide every day and every 30 seconds, people loss their lovely friends, or even their family. Furthermore, for every person who died because of a suicide, 20 or more may attempt suicide.

The problem can be made worse because many people who are depressed turn to alcohol or drugs as an escape. But they may not realize that the depressive effects alcohol and drugs have on the brain can actually intensify depression in the long run.

Some factors could trigger suicide.

When people depress, they can decide logical outcome to solve their problem. Teens are vulnerable to depression because some hormones and sleep cycles can affect mood

· Misuse of drugs and alcohol can result in depressive effects on the brain..

Warning Signs

There are often signs that someone may be thinking about or planning a suicide attempt. Here are some of them:

talking about suicide or death in general
talking about "going away"
referring to things they "won’t be needing," and giving away possessions
talking about feeling hopeless or feeling guilty
pulling away from friends or family and losing the desire to go out
having no desire to take part in favorite things or activities
having trouble concentrating or thinking clearly
experiencing changes in eating or sleeping habits
engaging in self-destructive behavior (drinking alcohol, taking drugs, or cutting, for example)

If You Think to Commit Suicide you should:

Tell someone you trust what’s going on with you.
Be around people who are caring and positive.
Ask someone to help you give solution of your problem.
Work with a therapist or counselor if problems are getting you down and depressed

Finally, appreciate your lives, and think that every problem has a solution. Think about your lovely family and friends that need you.

Tragically, the epidemic is shifting towards the developing world, where 80% of tobacco-related deaths will occur within a few decades. Today, 13 February 2008, Kevin Rudd, Australian Prime Minister, on behalf All Australian give a speech regarding Sorry Day. He said "Sorry, sorry, sorry" to Aboriginal People regarding Stolen Generation that did by the government some decades ago. The government had separated Aboriginal children from their parents. Moreover, there are not same rights among Indigenous People and Non-Indigenous People to pursue their education, careers and health facilities.

I was surprised when I read news from my handphone this morning. Ramos Horta who is well-known because he won a Noble Peace Prize was shooted during pre-dawn attack in his home by rebel soldier. He was shooted in his stomach and chest. In another area, Xanana Gusmao was attempted to assasinate. Fortunately, he could escape from that assasination. Horta is fine now. Hopefully, he can recover his health as soon as possible in Australia. Moreover, Timor Leste condition can be handle by Gusmao and Australia Prime Minister will send Australian troops to help controlling of Timor Leste.

What is that???????????????

Think.if you face a lot of articles that you should read to make an argument essay. What should we do first???
Ehmmmmmm...Reading all articles will waste our time, isn't it?
We should make annotated bibliography for each article that relate to our topic that we get on the internet. Firstly, we have to write full bibliographic reference (respecting rules about referencing, e.g. with details about author, title, publisher, place of publication…). Secondlt, we have to make concise summary and assessment of each article. The main benefit is it can ease our work to choose articles that are really appropriate with our topic

Popkin, Barry M. (2006). Technology, transport, globalization and the nutrition transition food policy. Food Policy Journal, 31, 554-569.

This journal discusses some issues related to imbalance among lifestyle, and development technology that lead to obesity pandemic. It examines physical activity patterns in work areas, use of transportation and leisure where people work in light job, use motor bike or car in developing country nowadays. Moreover, diet shift and food system is another major factor that increases non communicable diseases. People tend to consume poor dietary intake, high saturated intake, low intake of fruits and vegetables, and high intake of Trans fatty acids and sedentarianism. It also emphasizes that modern mass and modern food sectors can exacerbate this pandemic. Finally, it offers some methods to overcome the pandemic.

Explanation in this journal is detailed and can relate some aspects with examples and significant data. This journal supports some graphics to ease readers understand explanation. Nevertheless, one graph is not clear because it is so small.

Goldschneider, F. K., Waite, L. J., & Witsberger, C. (1986). "Nonfamily living and the erosion of traditional family orientations among young adults". American Sociological Review, 51, 541-554.

The authors, researchers at the Rand Corporation and Brown University, use data from the National Longitudinal Surveys of Young Women and Young Men to test their hypothesis that non-family living by young adults alters their attitudes, values, plans, and expectations, moving them away from their belief in traditional sex roles. They find their hypothesis strongly supported in young females, while the effects were fewer in studies of young males. Increasing the time away from parents before marrying increased individualism, self-sufficiency, and changes in attitudes about families. Bruffee, K.A. (1985), A short course in writing: practical rhetoric for teaching composition through collaborative learning (3rd ed), Boston: Little, Brown & Company.

Kenneth Bruffee’s Short Course in Writing has become a classic in the genre of collaborative learning and teaching. It contains exercises and accompanying notes for writers and teachers to be used in the context of the collaborative classroom. The book is divided into five parts, plus a set of model essays. The first two parts contain essay exercises that introduce students to the basic issues in essay writing: discovering a topic, generalising it, and either defending or explaining it. Parts four and five introduce students to the more complex issues in essay writing: demonstrating the importance or relevance of an argument and researching a topic. Between these two sections, part three contains most of the explicitly instructional material in the book.

This is the most helpful section of the book for teachers who wish to have a better understanding of the principles underlying collaborative group work and peer review, as well as good examples of what can be done. Bruffee’s clearly written and accessible text, with its extensive collection of exercises and model essays in a variety of genres, is an essential reference tool for anyone engaged in collaborative teaching and learning.

My Friends...APS 9M

My Friends in EAP, IALF, Jakarta .....................

We struggled together to pursue our education. We started our course on 8 January, 2007. it ended on 6 October 2008. Although, we learned English for 9 months, We could earn enough money and a lot of knowledge..........

9M2.....Our first teacher was Melanie Crook. Then, Ben Thomas taught us the last 3 months.

9M1, their first teacher was Paul and then Mourin.

Now, we are in Australia, struggle to finish our master graduate...Pray each other okey

Welcoming Party for New Students in UNimelb

On 3rd February, our seniors held welcoming party for us as new students In Lake Coburg. We met our seniors from all faculties from Melbourne, Latrobe, RMIT and Monash University. Firstly, we gathered to open the party. afterwards, we ate a wide variety of Indonesian
Cuisine...........ehmmmmmmmmm delicious. Unfortunately, I could't find Empek-empek, but I ate a lot of food such as Mie Ayam, Basho, Rendang, Rujak, Es buah, kerupuk, hiiii (I am starving....)...........................
Next...we played a game and made fun....Horreeeeeeeeeeeeeeee.....

Finally, party was closed by Bu lurah and the presenter.

Happy New Year for Chinese

Gong Ci Fa Cai in Melbourne

On 6 February 2008, Chinese worldwide celebrated their new year. One of Chinese community in Oz invited us to attend their special party in a church in Lygon Street. I came with my house mates. There were some activities in that celebration. Initially, we made Dumpling, a small sandwich (like stemmed Pangist); vegetarian and meat dumpling. Afterwards, every group should show their own creativity, for instance singing, yelling or even dancing. My group presented a song, "We were, we were rock u' but we changed the lyrics with 'Happy New Year' into 5 languages: Indonesia, Spanish, China, Hibu, and Korea. Subsequently, we listened a priest who explained regarding Isa's Birth. Finally, the celebration finished and we ate dessert. We went home happily because we can make friends, and understand other people culture. Gong Ci Fa Cai

There is a global transition on diet in developed countries and developing countries. Initially, people consumed healthy food such as vegetables, fruits and others. Moreover, in the past people did a lot of activities without using cars or other transportation. In globalisation, availability of products that contain more sugar and fat is everywhere, for instance junk foods. Furthermore, people from middle class can afford to buy the food because the price is not very costly. For a long period, it will lead to some chronic diseases such obesity and heart diseases. Moreover, people's health would deteriorate if they are reluctant to do physical activities such as walking or running.

Cooperation among governments, and health department to promote healthy lifestyle will improve quality of human resources's health in the future.
